The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
Last night, I was at my brother's place having dinner and watching the "Ren Ci Charity Show 2006". This is the very first charity show to kickstart the new year. Along with the NKF saga, funds raised in the first half of the programme crawled as slow as the snail. But after the Reverend Ming Yi did some balancing act walking across two narrow planks to get to the opposite of a 65-storey high building did the funds start to come in like a space rocket!
The Good Guys of course saved the day!!! They managed to get $6.8 million worth of funds after the show. What traumatises me is the video clips they show during intervals that show the sufferings of the patients. Most of them were old and helpless and very sick. There were tubes sticking into their bodies in every direction and this is really Gross... It always does its trick on me, making me tear.
The Bad Guy - Durai, made the whole charity business look real BAD... Only 10 cents from the funds raised goes to the patients!!!! How Sad! But NKF likes to lure people to donate money by offering luxurious condos, cars, etc... compared to last night's fund raising where no prizes are involved. Somehow, what Durai did will only kill the NKF patients as more and more people start to withdraw their monthly donations.... sigh .....
The Ugly... of course have to credit the media for making a hoo-ha out of everything (maybe because Singapore is too small to have NEWS, that's why reports on suicides are very 'rampant' in the papers!) And celebs make use of the PRESS to scold the Charity Organisations and TV Programme Director to say that they are not working in a circus! Well... there are bound to be injuries and accidents! (Even in your own home!) If you don't want to participate in the fund raising project, by all means QUIT!!! Why get injuired and push the blame to the whole world?? Also, I wonder how much did MediaCorp earn from this large scale Charity Show?? Maybe $1 million from the funds raised goes to MediaCorp for the airtime, the repeat telecast, the trailers, the celebrities, the insurance, the event management.... the list is endless.
I hope they don't have another charity show after CNY (that's when people are rich because of ang pows and bonuses)...
